national adoption month,    north state parent,    Underground Entertainment

Shiny, Happy People (or, Heading For Media Stardom)

By Tom Chandler 11/6/2013

I remain certain it was my Brad Pitt-esque good looks that convinced North State Parent to put my family's picture on the cover of their "National Adoption Month" issue, but I suppose it's just possible the abject cuteness of the rest of the family had something to do with it:

NorthStateParentCover Showing poor editorial judgement, North State Parent didn't Photoshop Brad Pitt's face over mine on the cover of their latest issue.

As you can see, circulation is due for a boost (and probably not because of the pasty guy in the sweater).

They also asked me to write a few words about international adoption, and because I have a lot to say about the subject, I promptly... didn't.

As a writer, I don't make a habit of directing readers to a piece of work I consider something of a failure, but the article is already out there for everyone to read (though happily, it does include more photos, which were shot by local shooter Karrie Snure).

I don't love it, but I'll make the Undergrounders a deal; anyone who's considering adoption can contact me, and I'll tell you everything I didn't squeeze into the article.

Until then, see you in print, Tom Chandler.

Charles: Most importantly, what’s the bottom line of that Success with Chores article. The bottom line is it's virtually impossible to get dad to do them.

Andrew Chandler: Why waste this star dome What, is that some crack about my head?

Bruce Ross: Weird. This particular North State parent saw a copy of that magazine on the kitchen table two days ago, but didn’t actually register who was on the cover. So much for my ability to rivet the male parent demographic.

Lee: Wow, you guys really stepped up to the plate. You know that’s what life is all about being a blessing to others…. Lee: Wow, you guys really stepped up to the plate. You know that’s what life is all about being a blessing to others…. Maybe, but my wife convinced me to adopt by playing up the tax breaks.

Steve Z: Sweet. Congrats Tom. That’s a good looking family save for that pasty looking guy. He could be a problem. Steve Z: Sweet. Congrats Tom. fishskicanoe: I was trying to think of some snarky response but, you know, that’s a nice picture of a nice family. You’ve done well. Hard to pick on the family (they're so cute), but feel free to snark on the writer. He can take it.

Oh, wow, that is intense. I can seen how that is an important part of the story.

Ethan: Even if you couldn’t squeeze everything in that you wanted, that’s good stuff. Stretch marks on the file cabinet, that’s funny. I left out the grim details surrounding the 16-hour flight home from Dubai with an 11 month-old who didn't who we were and plainly didn't like us...

JP2: Three out of four cute pics for the cover, glad the sun wasn’t out..hehehe….( I know,I know“I exude so much manliness,I don’t have room for hair”….) You are correct. Hair is for insecure, insincere types.

Cliff Graham: You may think the “work” isn’t great, but the story is. There's just a lot more to the story that hasn't been told. Gosh, if only I knew how to write and publish that writing so that others could read it...

Funny. I actually suggested bright yellow fly rods as a potential prop (there is a small spring creek running through the property where the photo shoot took place), but -- in what seems like a clear violation of my free speech rights (and perhaps evidence of outright oppression) -- the idea was vetoed. Fly fishermen of the world, unite.

You may not look like Brad Pitt, but you look like a guy I'd share some whisky with. We oughta do that sometime - again. Great photo buddy!
