As you lay in your tent pondering and reviewing each fish you caught earlier that day, you can hear the low relaxing noise of the river as it continues on its’ course. You remind yourself ... morethat you get to do this for one more night and two more days. You look to tomorrow with hopes that the fishing will be as good, not sure how it could be. Then your mind jumps to the four course meal you just ate, you wonder how they got all of that food into camp.

You wake up to the smell of bacon and coffee and the sound of the river working the edge of the bank, you know it will be a fine day as you anxiously get you pants on and get moving.

“And this is why overnight float trips are a summertime staple: Schedules are lax. Fishing days are long. Whatever mystery enchiladas the Dutch-oven reveals taste better when shared with friends. And with several uninterrupted days on the water, the experience is all about full immersion.” - Geoff Mueller-Senior Editor at The Drake

Single day float trips down the A and B sections of the Green River provide some of the most prolific fly-fishing in the world. These sections are known worldwide as premiere trout ... morestreams, and the epic fishing is just half of it. The scenery in these sections is awe inspiring. The clarity of the Green River, the vast amount of wildlife around the river, the red rock cliffs, and peaceful quiet are just few of the many lures that make many people call this one of their favorite places visit, vacation, and fish.

The Green River below Flaming Gorge dam boasts a very large 15,000 trout per square mile. This fish population is extremely healthy and large Brown and Rainbow trout are common. These sections of the river are considered a Blue Ribbon fishery and produce some of the best fishing that can be had.
Fishing Reports
Flaming Gorge Dam is currently releasing an average daily release of 2,200 cfs. The February forecast for unregulated inflow into Flaming Gorge for the April-July period is continuing ... moreto decrease and is currently at 70% of average. Dry conditions are forecast this spring. The remainder of February falls within the winter period base flow classification outlined in the 2006 Record of Decision, while March and April are transition months. The base flow classification period limits the daily change to 3% per day and those restrictions end during the transition period. Therefore, beginning February 15, 2016, Flaming Gorge Dam will begin decreasing from 2,200 cfs to minimum releases of 800 cfs according to the attached schedule. It is anticipated that releases will remain at 800 cfs until the beginning of spring runoff sometime in May or June. Base flow releases are subject to observed hydrology and all projections may change.

Fishing
Our guides have been on the water a lot lately training new guides for this season and fishing with some of the crew from the shop in SLC. Yesterday we started to see the larger Buffalo midges that we have been waiting for. There were also BWO’s on the water and the fish that were rising were more than willing to eat our BWO patterns. We also tossed around streamers for a short time and had great results on black dungeons.

Tips
We have been throwing 150 grain sinking lines and 7ips sinking leaders while fishing steamers and looking for medium speed water with good structure and letting it get near the bottom before starting the retrieve and letting it swing through the current before re casting. The BWO and Midge fishing has been the best in slower water. If you are not seeing bugs move, try and find a sheltered area from the wind also look for shaded areas. We have had the best success fishing BWO Duns as a lead fly and tying a cripple behind it, they tend to eat the cripple 9 out of 10 times.

Matt has a strong work ethic and guides with a large amount of enthusiasm. He purchased his first Dory when he was 18 to assist his craving for running rivers. His passion to spend ... moretime on the water has played an enormous part in his life. That began by spending a large amount of time stomping around with his Grandfather on the Provo, and Weber Rivers and many of the Stillwater fisheries around Utah.
It then became an addiction as he began to find a crew of friends that had a similar calling to moving water and the fish that lived there. His dream from a young age was to become a Fly-fishing Guide. His dream was realized, when he started to work for Western Rivers Flyfishers, and found he shared the views of his co-workers and the shop’s owner towards the overall experience that can be gained by spending time on the water with good company.
Matt has true affection for throwing Dry Flies and taking an old school approach to both Fly-fishing and guiding. He is an excellent instructor in all types of fly-fishing from Spey casting, throwing streamers, all the way to achieving the perfect drift with a dry fly. He loves to teach and learn from anyone who is willing to spend time with him on the water.
I am a Salt Lake City native and grew up within a few blocks of our fly shop. I’m looking forward to a great fourth season of guiding on the Green River below Flaming Gorge. I started ... morefly fishing the waters of northern Utah and Idaho with my dad and brother at a young age with an emphasis on matching the hatch and finding dry-fly fishing opportunities. Learning this kind of fishing in my youth gave me a keen interest in entomology, reading water, patient observation, and clean presentation. I love exploring small streams and still water but was always mesmerized by big rivers, where complexity seems to hold hands with simplicity, and I feel I am constantly learning. Growing up teaching friends how to fish has built a love for instructing and guiding as a whole, and to me, there is nothing more enjoyable than watching clients improve their skills, catch more fish, and in turn have a more rounded, full experience on the river. In more recent years, fishing a two-handed rod with a swung fly as well as stalking the banks with big dry-flies has taken over my free time. I also love chasing warm water species like carp and bass in the summer. I still find some time to snow/skateboard but they’ve taken a definite back seat to fly fishing the last few years. To me, the Green River is heaven. It’s hard to beat its variety of water, scenery, wildlife, and fishing opportunities for novice to expert anglers and the fish are vibrant and healthy. Not to mention the incredible dry fly fishing. This part of our great state will surely keep me busy for years to come.
Brad received his first fly rod on his 11th birthday and has been fishing ever since. He began working and guiding for Western Rivers Flyfisher in 2001, mainly on Utah’s small streams. ... moreIn 2008 the Green River beckoned and his guiding switched to the Green River and he now lives in Dutch John, UT, and guides year-round. In off times he concentrates fishing small streams and, enjoys upland bird hunting.
From Utah, Darren’s been flyfishing from a very young age and tutored by his father. His learning country is the rivers of the northern Wasatch Mountains such as the Logan River, Bear ... moreRiver, Blacksmith Fork and many others, plus with his dad he was lucky enough to spend much of his early learning years on the Rivers of Southern Montana. Studied Bilology at both University of Utah and then Weber State which gives him a very good concept of the outdoors, Fish and insects.
