Dan: This new data will complicate the process but it’s science so I will, in all due diligence, review the results and make adaptations where appropriate. Or you could just do what I do, and eat the food. Figure my immune system needs bolstering, and that which does not kill us makes us stronger.

RE: 5 second rule. Myth Busters and another Discovery Channel research group have covered this topic as well. What I have learned so far is: The wetter/stickier the food/surface is the shorter the elapsed time that can be allowed. In accordance with this I no longer consume things like whipped cream, soups, peanutbuttered bread , pastas with sauce, etc., when they fall to the floor. I use a 2 second ... more rule for things like hotdogs fresh from boiling, buttered toast, pastas without sauce, etc. The harder the food/surface the longer the elapsed time allowed. Thus I may allow an M&M, a peanut, or a dry cherry to remain on the kitchen floor for several minutes before consuming them. Heck, I don't really worry about time at all with hard shelled foods. This new data will complicate the process but it's science so I will, in all due diligence, review the results and make adaptations where appropriate.
