Since Ethan was born, I have been hoping he would find passion in fly-fishing like I do. The idea of traveling the world and finding new fishing adventures together would be a dream ... morecome true. I waited patiently for his coordination, focus, and patience to develop enough to get him out on the water. With Ethan, I knew there would only be one opportunity to introduce him to fly-fishing, and if he was not enthralled, there would not be a second time.

It has been a long spring of heavy nymphs, strike indicators, and big streamers. For me the real fun begins with dry fly season. On the Madison and Big Hole, dry fly season kicks off ... morewith the Salmonfly hatch, then by mid-July the little bugs start, caddis, yellow sallies, and some mayflies. Along with the little bugs come the seldom seen but often fished Midnight stones.

Everyone familiar with the Madison valley knows it is no stranger to gale force winds. At some point it becomes no fun for even the most ardent fly fisher when the line fails to turn ... moreover, line starts pooling, flys come at your face with the speed of a bullet, and your leader resembles a bird’s nest more than something to catch fish with.

Another Great Stay at the Rainbow
This is our second year in a row at this very special place. Rooms are clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. Besides rooms they have fishing guide service and a fully stocked fly shop on site. Rooms are a reflection of what you would expect and want to stay in when your in Montana. This place and grounds are well maintained and pleasing to the eye. But what makes this place special is the ... more owners they are super people that make you stay special. They are very helpful on recommendations on places to eat and other businesses in Ennis and surrounding area. The owners have created a family environment that starts with them and is supported by the housekeepers, guides and really the people who stay there. This will become an annual stop for us.

Great Lodge, Staff and Location on the Madsion River in Ennis.”
This was a great little lodge and the owners were super. Ed helped me out finding local places to fish and flies to use. I spent 2 days fishing the nearby O'Dell Creek which was tough but very rewarding and enjoyable fishing. I will be back to stay, fish, do O'Dell and maybe get a guide to do a float boat next time. Ennis was a freindly little town with neat stores and both Virginia City and Nevada ... more City are short drives away. The only down side of my recent 9 days in Montana was the overcast conditions due to all the fires out West.

A good location for fishing the Madison
We had a float trip on the Madison and decided to stay in Ennis. Because of a last minute booking, we could not stay in the main lodge. Instead we stayed in one of their two bedroom houses down the street. It was large and well equipped, but for two it was too big. Next time we will request the main lodge and book early enough to get a room. Other wise, our stay was comfortable, and the hosts, Ed ... more and Jeanne, were very nice and accommodating.

Another great year!
RVL continues to be one of my favorite places to stay in the West. Ed and Jean run a fabulous lodge with spotlessly clean rooms, a great continental-style breakfast in the a.m., and all with a clientele that is friendly and very pro-fishing. Conveniently located on Route 287, about an hour from Yellowstone Park and about an hour from the Bozeman Airport in Belgrade. If you are a flyfisherman and want ... more to be near the Madison River, Rainbow Valley Lodge is the place to stay.
