Nestlé Waters Ends Pursuit of McCloud Water

By Tom Chandler 9/10/2009

I'm working on something much bigger, so this will be short and sweet:

Nestlé Waters North America has decided to withdraw its proposal to build a bottling facility in McCloud.

via Nestlé Waters ends pursuit of McCloud facility - Mount Shasta, CA - Mount Shasta Herald.

Bye, Nestle.

One down, two more to go (Klamath dams && Westlands).

UPDATE: I'll certainly write more about this development next week; it's the culmination of a lot of work on the part of a lot of people, and it deserves a few more nouns, verbs and adjectives. Also, Nestle still owns the old mill site in the middle of McCloud - anyone want to buy, protect, or use for sustainable development a 240 acre chunk in the middle of trout heaven?

David Palais, David Palais. Resident of Nor Cal for a number of years. Bragging to his neighbors about residents of McCloud being pushovers. Country bumpkins. He couldn't deliver for Nestle. Didn't even come close. Nestle has plenty of experience getting what they want, and they get it from almost any small town. Except McCloud. Shouldn't Nestle just fire David Palais? Five years and nothing? What ... more a loser. Chris

I hate to be a downer, but I doubt this is the end of the Nestle saga. It simply does not make sense for Nestle to pay for environmental analysis on its own merit, unless they plan on using it sometime in the future. And as far as I can tell there is no commitment other than a simple verbal discussion that they are abandoning the concept (for the immediate future). While they may say that the studies ... more are for community development (which would be decent PR for them), having talked to people more familiar with the work, I am not so sure that's the case here. It makes much more sense to do the studies independently, then follow up with a new revamped proposal in a few years when people have taken their eye off the ball. Fishermen have a tendency to believe tall tales, and I don't think the situation here is any different.

A great outcome, the result of some serious hard work. Kudos all 'round! By the way, who starts your car now, Wally? I know you got him as food-taster, no worries there. But these guys, they like to play rough; watch your back... Only 240 acres? Any photos? Shoot, maybe I'll just buy it outa my oil well petty cash and turn it into a summer retreat, or something...

Man this is (good) information over load. Nice job to all involved. Now we just have to hold our breath to see what Dumb and Dumber in Sacramento are going to pull out from between their rear pockets on the water bills and hope and pray common sence prevails.

Congratulations! Good luck on Westlands... Got any ideas for how to get people to stop growing cotton in Kern County?
