Mikey Wier's Latest Video: The Pit River (Part Documentary, Part Fishporn)

By Tom Chandler 8/29/2012

CalTrout's Mike Wier just released a documentary/fish porn video on the Pit River, including a little history and news about how it fishes at the "new" (FERC-mandated) flows.

Idaho Steel, I fish the Pit alot and hardly ever use indicators. The bottom is too uneven to get decent drifts. And there are so many little pockets that hold fish, that an indicator is burdensome. Some slower wider deeper runs, yeah.....indicators are a help. But most of the river is prime water for just short-line highsticking. As for the color, that river is never clear. It's not muddy in per se, ... more but just a dark green/blue. It's something to do with the upper watershed. The clarity/or lack thereof, is what makes it such a great stream to fish. Definitely don't have to be stealthy. But the Pit, is a bug soup, and by far the best trout stream in CA, and definitely one of the best in the country, hands down.

Very, very cool! As far as I'm concerned that's the end-all, be-all of trout fishing. Nice job CalTrout. I am wondering why the water is so muddy. One would think a tail water would be clear? Just out of curiosity, what is it with California anglers and bobbers? Not an indictment, just some honest perplexity.

Yeah, this is a great river, no doubt. Now if I could just figure out how to fish it without drowning. Last time I saw it (last October), just looking at it scared me.
