I Think We Can Afford To Take Out A Few Dams, Eh?

By Tom Chandler 4/18/2012

Think we've built a few dams since the 1800s? In twenty-five painful seconds, you'll see how we've altered the hydroscape.

Some of these are useful and some -- particularly those blocking access to anadromous fish -- are pretty damned harmful (as Singlebarbed would say, the only way to be sure is to nuke 'em from orbit).

This raises the question similar to the legal riddle; if someone's not legally alive, can you kill them with impunity? If they're not in the database, would anyone miss them if they were (ahem) removed?

And I bet those are the ones that appear in some government database. The ex-Brook Trout stream down the hill has three dams on it that I know of (creating lovely eco-experience enhancing ornamental ponds) and I bet they're not on that database. Pretty stunning.
