Good News From Montana: HB 306 is Dead

Governor Vetoes Cyanide Leach Mining Bill

In what you'd have to describe as a strong political statement, Montana's Governor Schweitzer applied a hot branding iron "veto" to some of the Montana State Legislature's nuttier legislation, including SB 306 -- the cyanide leach mining bill which had been largely rejected by voters twice before.

It's gratifying to see him apply the veto he promised, but then you realize he had to apply the veto, and you wonder how things got that far out of hand.

Wayne at the WillFishForWork blog offers a Montanan's perspective on the whole sordid affair, and I suspect -- given the volume of nutjob legislation coming out of the state -- we'll be hearing more from Big Sky Country soon.

See you at the capital, Tom Chandler.

Schweitzer has brought some new air into Montana politics. He puts on a good show, has made some good calls and a few bad ones but compared to what we've had in the recent past (anyone remember the "lap dog of industry", Judy Martz- that was worse than barf) he's actually brought some respectability back to MT politics. And given the show put on by the 2011 legislature I'd say he's looking better ... more all the time. Could there be some senate ambitions for Schweitzer? I wonder...

Schweitzer is out of a job in 2013. Term limit. Term limits, incidentally, are one of the major reasons why we have such inane shenanigans from the rookies in the Montana legislature. Hearty application of grease is another, but every legislative body suffers from that.

We'll see if he's rewarded or punished by the voters next election. Let's hope "rewarded."

The Governor seems amazingly sane given the nutjob bias of state legislators.
