Gierach's Latest Book (Inauspiciously) Appearing On Tax Day

By Tom Chandler 3/15/2014

John Gierach's latest fly fishing essay book is set to appear on April 15 (making it the sole bright spot on tax day for at least some of us).

Titled All Fishermen Are Liars (at least we know the title qualifies as non-fiction), it's accompanied by the latest rage in book publishing -- a video trailer:

I don't know if I'll see a pre-release review copy or simply buy it on release day like the rest of humanity, but either way, expect a review.

UPDATE: Gierach's book release tour will take him around the country. See the schedule here.
See you under a reading lamp, Tom Chandler.

The latest from John Gierach should roll out on April 15. The latest from John Gierach should roll out on April 15.

Bob: Since I expect that I will have already read most of the essays in the new book in FR and R how come that caveat is not somehow in the introductory messaging at the front of the book? Haven’t seen it in his other work. It's common for columnists and essayists to publish books containing essays published elsewhere, though you're right -- I have seen notices in the front of other books identifying ... more the essays by their prior publication. In my case, my FR&R subscription lapsed some time ago, so they're all new to me.

Looking forward to buying the book. JG is probably my favorite writer, he almost literally takes you along with him on his travels, many of which are familiar to those of us who fish locally,. Not just the big time international stuff. One comment....or maybe a question? Since I expect that I will have already read most of the essays in the new book in FR and R how come that caveat is not somehow ... more in the introductory messaging at the front of the book? Haven't seen it in his other work. Thanks

Marty: btw if you show up at an audit with garlic and a cross your attorney will threaten to quit and give you a lecture about not making it worse See, the Underground is about more than just dumb fly fishing advice. We also publish information about bringing the IRS down upon you, potentially ruining your life.

Just to qualify: April 1st is the official trout opener in New York State, but much of the Adirondacks is under a heavy blanket of snow, so the wild brookie ponds will have to wait. Next week it'll have to be my local creek, the Oriskany. In the meantime, I've been going back through a couple of John Gierach's old essays from Trout Bum, especially the one about hiking and fishing the small creeks ... more up along the Continental Divide. I sit looking at the stamped envelope holding my taxes and the paper check that I will make sure is postmarked on doomsday...... at least snail mail and paper lets me hold onto my money for every possible nanosecond..... I use holy water with a little crushed garlic ot hopefully cause some pain to whatever bloodsucker happens to open the envelope... I've been audited often enough that I just expect ... more it now.... btw if you show up at an audit with garlic and a cross your attorney will threaten to quit and give you a lecture about not making it worse...... I'll be reading Gierach's book after the sobbing, screaming, wailing, gnashing of teeth and hangover have subsided.....

Tom: You guys are lucky, trout season in my neck of the woods doesn’t start until mid July, so still awhile to wait and lots of time to read Gierach’s latest book. In truth, a lot of our rivers are open to fishing year round -- just not the little streams I love so much. So if I don't fish much in the winter, it's more of a self-enforced exile.

John Naresky: It would have been perfect if they released this one on April 1st to kick off trout season it would have been perfect. For you maybe. In our neck of the woods, the general trout season doesn't open until the end of April. Of course, many of us have already committed ritual, tax-related seppuku by then, so the waters are less crowded.
