Looking for some fly-fishing action off-the-beaten-path? Ennis Montana, is known for some of the best fly-fishing along the legendary Madison River. But where should you go if you’re looking for more solitude just outside of town? Try one of the many creeks and tributaries winding through the Madison Valley to carve your own nook of fly-fishing peace and quietude. Here are the top fly-fishing spots near Ennis for those with an appetite for solidarity.
O’Dell Creek
The Odell Creek, located just outside the town strip of Ennis, provides a great venue to fish in waters with a lot of privacy and little traffic. It is also a good choice when the winter run-off makes the Madison difficult to fish. It includes a 12-mile stretch of spring fed stream with water that flows about 200 cu feet of water into the Madison River. The fishing is technical with presentation being very important. Many large fish are located right on the bank in the shallow water. There is a balance of riffles and pools in much of this stretch of water. The surroundings include walking through meadows along the shore as well as through the creek. Buggers and beads are quite effective as well as Parachute Adams and Hoppers. Reserve a day on O’Dell Creek at the Rainbow Valley Lodge, at the fly shop, located just outside the town of Ennis. You can reach them online at www.rainbowvalleylodge.com or contact them at 800.452.8254.
Jack Creek
Jack Creek is located about 4 miles from down town Ennis and can be accessed through Madison Valley Ranch right off of Jeffers Rd. This private stream provides plenty of action with its great dry fishing.
Blaine Spring Creek
Blaine Spring Creek is located about 5 miles south of the town of Ennis, Montana. It can be accessed through private lands with permission or by coming down from Barney Bridge. If you have a pontoon boat, it’s a great drift. Because of the level of water, guides do not float through this part of the Madison River giving you privacy and more fishing action. Plan a whole day if using a pontoon boat and don’t forget to pack a lunch and water.
